Tucker’s Story
Tucker (Rugby, ND) was born premature at 26 weeks 4 days and due to a brain bleed developed a condition called Hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder caused by an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles (cavities) deep within the brain. This excess fluid causes the ventricles to widen, putting harmful pressure on the brain’s tissues.
While there is no cure for Hydrocephalus the most common treatment is the surgical insertion of a drainage system, called a shunt.
Tucker spent the first 3.5 months in the NICU in Minneapolis, MN. Once discharged Tucker had continuous follow ups in the cities for the Hydrocephalus along with multiple surgeries for shunt revisions over the next 10 years.
Tucker was nominated for Make-A-Wish by his aunt Molly. When the wish volunteers first asked Tucker (who was 6 at the time), “If you could make one wish, what would you wish for?” he said, “Toys!” As a young boy, he couldn’t fully comprehend the endless possibilities his wish could bring. His final wish was to stay in a really big hotel and swim with dolphins!
During Tucker’s Wish Reveal Party, someone asked him how excited he was for his wish to come true. His response was, “I can’t believe I get to fly somewhere fun instead of flying to the hospital!” Tucker had been on several flights before, but all of them had the same destination—the hospital in the cities. The sheer excitement and joy on his face when he discovered his wish would be granted remains one of his mom’s favorite memories.
Please consider helping us continue to make wishes like Tucker’s come true. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Make-A-Wish North Dakota. Alternatively, you can make a direct donation using the link below.
